Talán te is láttad 2001-ben a mozikban (vagy azóta DVD-n) A jövő kezdete (Play it forward) című filmet. A történet szerint egy Las Vegas-i iskolában azt a feladatot kapják a gyerekek új tanáruktól, hogy álljanak elő valamivel, ami tényleg jó értelemben véve lenne képes megváltoztatni a világot.

A tizenegy éves Trevor az “add tovább” koncepciójával rukkol elő. Az elképzelés szerint, ha ő tesz három emberrel valami jót, és aztán ez a három ember ugyanígy tesz majd másik három emberrel, egy idő után a Föld egész lakosságához el kell, hogy jusson a jótettek egyike.

Tanára lát fantáziát a dologban, s arra biztatja a fiút, hogy próbálja ki a teóriát a gyakorlatban is. Trevor tehát munkához lát. A jótettek sorát azzal indítja, hogy befogadja házukba a hajléktalan Jerry-t, amíg az képes lesz újra lábra állni és gondoskodni önmagáról. A folyamat elindul, az “add tovább” pedig lassacskán valódi mozgalommá növi ki magát. Egy este aztán egy Los Angeles-i riporter autója lerobban az út szélén, mire egy tehetős férfi csak úgy, minden magyarázat nélkül odadobja neki Jaguárjának a kulcsait. Az ifjú újságíró nem tudja mire vélni a túlzottan nagylelkű gesztust, s elhatározza, hogy kideríti, honnan is indult el ez az önzetlenségi hullám. A nyomok pedig Trevor iskolájába vezetnek …

Az ötlet tehát mindössze annyi, hogy mindenki segít három embernek valami nagyon nehéz dologban, melyet egymaga képtelen segítség nélkül megoldani.

Mi lenne, ha holnap elkezdenénk?

We don’t get the real information or anything more than buzz, opinion and dramatic sound bites in most of today’s media. The press moves from one headline to the next and what they touted as urgent! Disaster! Dramatic Crisis! has a half life of around three days and is never heard of again. Or occasionally if the ratings hold up the story will stick around, like OJ Simpson trial, Sarah Palin’s stupidity, and the BP Oil disaster.

Hopefully more and more people will get their news and information from the internet, and we can begin moving back toward a government of the people, by the people and FOR the people. Somehow our values have inverted and now the majority of the companies have placed bottom line greed ahead of people, quantity ahead of quality, objective accumulation ahead or subjective experience. And that’s interfering with the quality of life we say we want. Witness the BP oil disaster (representative of the short term, short-sighted decision making process), Iran and Afghanistan wars, the megabank’s greed speculation… When I look for solutions the fist step I see is for more people to be informed and educated. Here’s a trailer that moves in that direction:

The Dalai Lama turns 75 today. For decades he has given us all hope — setting a generous example of wisdom, non-violence and compassion for a better world.

Now we can return the favour — let’s send the Dalai Lama a birthday tribute from millions of us worldwide! It will be delivered personally to him on a “wall of warm wishes” outside the temple in Dharamsala and broadcast around the region.

Let’s take this moment to honour the Dalai Lama together and make his birthday last as long as we keep signing!
